Alternative Pompidou Center, 1985
The Pompidou in Paris was built as a tour de force, an architectural philosophic statement that mechanical equipment should be visually expressed. This following the mainstream modern expression of structure (following Mies Van Der Rohe), The Pompidou, with great circular ducts on the outside excited most viewers.
I wished to show how a collage of architecture with a Building with Artist component: a citizens art paved plaza and entrances of historic references are combined with a glassed museum with mechanical equipment exposed. Instead of a single plane of glass with mechanical ducts outside, I show ducts within a double glass wall. This is to create a space which can be used to heat or cool the building with heat exchangers.
